Rotary evaporator is a commonly used laboratory equipment, which can be divided into the following types according to its structure and application fields.
- Rotovap
This is the most common type of rotovap device, which consists of a rotary bottle, a condenser and a vacuum system. The solution to be evaporated is placed in a rotary bottle, and the solution is evaporated, condensed and collected through the synergistic effect of the rotary bottle and the condenser, so as to realize solvent separation and concentration.
- Rotary Thin Film Evaporator
This kind of evaporator is further developed on the basis of rotary evaporation bottle, and is used to deal with high viscosity, easy crystallization or heat-sensitive substances. It uses thin-film technology to evenly coat the solution on the rotating cylindrical wall and evaporate it at high vacuum and low temperature to realize efficient evaporation, concentration and separation.
- Rotary Bed Evaporator
Rotating bed evaporator is a kind of continuous flow evaporation equipment, which is suitable for large-scale production and industrial application. It sprays liquid evenly on the rotating cylindrical bed and distributed spraying device, and evaporates and separates it under high temperature and vacuum conditions.
- Rotary Scraped Surface Evaporator
This evaporator is mainly used to treat high viscosity liquid and suspended particulate matter. It scrapes the solution evenly on the heating surface through the built-in rotating scraper or scraper, and evaporates and separates it under high temperature and vacuum.
According to the lifting mode, rotovap machine can be divided into manual lifting and electric.

Manual Lifting Rotary Evaporator
1. Advantages
- High stability: The manual lifting rotary evaporator adopts mechanical lifting device, which has simple structure, high stability and easy operation.
- Low maintenance cost: The price of manual lifting rotary evaporator is relatively low and the maintenance cost is also low.
- Flexible operation: The lifting height and rotation speed can be easily adjusted according to the needs to meet different experimental requirements.
- Wide application range: Manual lifting rotary evaporator can be used in many fields such as solvent separation, concentration and purification.
2. Disadvantages
- Manual operation: Manual lifting of rotary evaporator requires manual adjustment of lifting height and rotating speed, which takes a long time.
- Low working efficiency: The working efficiency of manual lifting rotary evaporator is relatively low, which is not suitable for mass production.
3. Application Field
Manual lifting rotary evaporator is suitable for small-scale chemical experiments or small-scale pharmaceutical work in laboratories and schools. Because of its relatively low price and low maintenance cost, it is the first choice for many laboratories and schools.
Electric Rotary Evaporator
1. Advantages
- Automation: The electric rotary evaporator has the functions of automatic lifting and automatic control of rotation speed, which is simple to operate and has high stability.
- Efficient work: The electric rotary evaporator has high working efficiency and is suitable for large-scale production and industrial application.
- Improve production efficiency: The electric rotary evaporator can work continuously, which improves production efficiency.
2. Disadvantages
High price: The price of electric rotary evaporator is relatively high, and the cost of repair and maintenance is also relatively high.
Power requirement: it needs to be connected to the power supply to work normally.

How to Set Up
1. Preparatory work
A. Ensure that the rotary evaporator and related equipment are in good working condition, and clean and check whether the equipment is in good condition.
B. Select appropriate rotating bottles, bath pots and cooling devices according to the experimental needs, and ensure their compatibility and safety.
C. Configure the required consumables and auxiliary equipment, such as cooling water source and vacuum pump.
2. Install the rotary bottle
A. Insert the rotary bottle into the bracket of the rotary evaporator and fix it with a fixture.
B. Make sure that the rotary bottle is aligned with the rotating shaft and is not tilted or swayed.
3. Connect the cooling device
A. Connect the cooling device to the condensing tube of the rotary bottle.
B. Ensure sufficient supply of cooling water, and connect the cooling water inlet pipe and drain pipe.
4. Set the temperature and speed
A. According to the experimental requirements, set the temperature on the control panel to the required evaporation temperature.
B. Set the rotational speed of the rotary evaporator, usually expressed in rpm.
5. Set the vacuum pump
A. Connect a vacuum pump to the vacuum port of a rotary evaporator.
B. Turn on the vacuum pump and adjust the vacuum degree to control the evaporation rate.
6. Operational verification
A. Before starting the rotary evaporator, make sure that all connections are firm and the equipment is in a proper state.
B. conduct a no-load test run to check whether the rotation is stable and whether the cooling device works normally.
7. Experimental operation
A. According to the experimental requirements, pour the solution to be evaporated into a rotating bottle.
B. Start the rotary evaporator and vacuum pump, and adjust the rotating speed and vacuum degree as required.
C. In the evaporation process, the parameters such as heating power, rotating speed and vacuum degree are adjusted according to the experimental requirements.
8. Safe operation
A. When operating the rotary evaporator, please strictly abide by the laboratory safety operation specifications and use personal protective equipment to ensure personal safety and the safety of the laboratory environment.
B. Regularly check the running state, sealing condition and integrity of accessories of the equipment, and carry out necessary maintenance and repair.
