In ancient times, the condenser of rotary evaporator adopted a simple and effective natural cooling method. This method uses the cooling effect of water to realize the condensation of steam, so that the evaporator can continue the distillation process.

Well condensation method: A common ancient condensation method is to connect an evaporator with a well. The hot steam generated in the evaporator is led to the water well through pipes or channels, and then the steam will quickly condense into liquid under the cooling effect of water. This method makes use of the low temperature and high heat capacity of water, which can effectively reduce the temperature in the evaporator and realize the condensation of steam.

Pool condensation method: Another common ancient condensation method is to connect the evaporator with the pool. The steam in the evaporator flows into the pool through pipes or channels, and then it will gradually condense into liquid under the contact of water and the action of the environment. This method is common in some large-scale rotary evaporators, such as the ancient salt pan evaporator. Water and salt solution flow into the pool for heating and evaporation, and then steam is condensed back to liquid by pool condensation method to realize salt production.

Although these ancient natural condensation methods were simple, they were very effective under the technical conditions at that time. They make full use of the cooling characteristics of water without complicated mechanical equipment and energy supply, so that the rotary evaporator can run continuously and obtain the required condensation effect. However, this condensation method has some limitations, such as low condensation efficiency and the need for a lot of water resources. With the progress of science and technology and the arrival of industrial revolution, the condenser of rotary evaporator has gradually developed a more efficient and controllable condensation method.

The period of industrial revolution is an important period for the technical progress of rotary evaporator condenser. During this period, with the rapid development of machinery industry and science and technology, the design and manufacture of condensers have been significantly improved.

  • Application of metal materials: during the industrial revolution, condensers began to use metal materials, such as copper and iron, to make pipes or shell structures. This change increases the surface area of the condenser and improves the heat transfer efficiency. Metal materials have high thermal conductivity, which can absorb and release heat more effectively, so that steam can be condensed into liquid more quickly.
  • Circulating water supply system: the introduction of water pump system is another important improvement of condenser technology of rotary evaporator during industrial revolution. The condensed liquid is reintroduced into the condenser by the water pump to realize circulating water supply, which can improve the condensation effect. Circulating water supply system can not only save water resources, but also keep the fluidity of cooling medium, avoid the formation of dead water area and further improve condensation efficiency.
  • Improved condenser structure: During the industrial revolution, the condenser structure was also improved. The traditional condenser structure is usually straight tube, but during this period, more complex heat exchange structures, such as spiral tube type and plate type, appeared. These improved structures can increase the condensation area and improve the heat transfer efficiency, so that steam can contact with the cooling medium more fully and realize more efficient condensation.
  • Steam pressure control technology: At the same time, the improvement of steam pressure control technology appeared during the industrial revolution. By accurately controlling the pressure and temperature of steam, steam can be cooled and liquefied more fully in the condenser. The application of this technology not only improves the condensation effect, but also increases the stability and controllability of the production process.

In the 20th century, people began to pay attention to improving the heat transfer efficiency of condensers to better meet the experimental requirements. At the same time, new types of condensers have begun to appear, such as Condenser Liebig, Allihn Condenser and Reflux Condensor for rotary evaporator.

types of condenser

Condenser Liebig

Condenser Liebig tube is a new type of condenser with high heat transfer coefficient and efficiency. Different from the traditional condenser tube, its pipe is straight, not curved. This structure can increase the surface area of the pipeline and improve the heat transfer efficiency. At the same time, the Condenser Liebig has smaller volume and lower energy consumption.

Condenser Liebig is a kind of straight glass tube composed of internal and external combination, which is mostly used for distillation operation. The steam temperature is less than 140 degrees and cannot be used for reflux. The upper and lower sides of its outer tube are respectively provided with connecting pipe joints, which are used as water outlets and water inlets. The use method is to connect the connection port near the lower end with water through a plastic pipe as a water inlet. Because the water temperature at the water inlet is low, the water heated by steam has a higher temperature, and the hotter water will automatically flow upward due to the decrease of density, which is helpful for the circulation of cooling water.

Allihn condenser

Allihn condenser tube is a kind of condenser with spherical structure, and its surface area is much larger than that of traditional condenser. By adding many small holes on the spherical surface, steam can be condensed into liquid more quickly. Another advantage of the spherical condenser tube is that it can avoid the occurrence of dead corners, so that the flow can be better controlled.

Allihn condenser tubes are spherical or cylindrical, with and without cores. Spherical condenser tube with core is mainly used to condense the steam of distillate quickly and evenly and collect liquid during distillation operation. Because of the air column formed inside the coreless spherical condenser tube, the distilled liquid flows back, which accelerates the distillation speed and prevents the liquid from boiling.

Reflux condensor

The reflux condenser is composed of many small curved pipes. This structure can increase the length and surface area of the pipes, thus improving the heat transfer efficiency. The serpentine condenser is usually used to treat high-concentration samples, because it can better meet the demand of higher heat transfer coefficient for such samples.

The reflux condenser tube is mainly used for the reflux of organic preparation and is suitable for liquids with low boiling point. Its inner tube is connected by several glass balls, which is used for the reflux of organic preparation. It is suitable for laboratories in scientific research, universities, petroleum, chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, medical and health care, primary and secondary schools, etc. When used in distillation, fractionation or reflux devices, it plays the role of condensing steam and condensing liquid droplets when matched with distillation flask and curved nozzle.
